SARAMACCA RIVER KAYAK EXPEDITION
Join us for an exciting expedition through one of Suriname’s most remote and pristine regions.
Paddle roughly 60 km from Pusugrunu to Makaja Pingo as you navigate the diverse waters of the Saramacca River. Once a vital connection between tribal villages, this route was notoriously challenging for traditional korjals (wooden boats). With the introduction of roads about a decade ago, the river was gradually abandoned, allowing nature to reclaim its course.
Today, it offers a rare and untouched wilderness experience, where encountering other travellers is highly unlikely. Keep an eye out for traces of old settlements, whispering stories of the past.

Itinerary Day 1
We’ll set off early in the morning, departing around 07:00 for our drive to Pusugrunu. The journey will take approximately eight hours, offering plenty of time for scenic views along the way. The drive is an adventure in itself, with the opportunity to spot wildlife and learn about the area from your guide. Enjoy a relaxed lunch on the road as you take in the sights.
Upon reaching Pusugrunu, we’ll meet our local guide, who will give us a tour of his village and share insights into local life. Afterward, we’ll enjoy a delicious dinner together before preparing our kayaks and gear for the days ahead, setting the stage for the exciting expedition to come.
DAY 2, 3 & 4
After a restful night at a guesthouse in Pusugrunu, we’ll rise early, ready to begin our adventure. As the sun rises, our kayaks will hit the water for the first time, offering a stunning view as we paddle through the misty river, accompanied by the sounds of waking birds. It’s the perfect moment to start our journey towards the village of Makaja Pingo.
Each day will begin with an early paddle, followed by a midday break to enjoy a delicious lunch and relax. This is your chance to cool off with a refreshing swim, savour the breathtaking surroundings, try your hand at fishing, or even enjoy the thrill of sitting in the rapids! After the break, we’ll continue paddling with the hopes of spotting wildlife such as capybaras, tapirs, anacondas, and much more.
As the day draws to a close, we’ll find a scenic spot to set up camp for the night. Once settled, we’ll enjoy a hearty dinner around the campfire. For those who are up for it, we can venture on a short evening hike to search for nocturnal wildlife, giving us a glimpse of the jungle’s activity after dark.
Day 5
The final paddle
Our last few hours on the river begin with an early rise for one final kayaking session. We’ll paddle towards the village of Makaja Pingo, soaking in the last moments of the river’s beauty. Upon arrival, it will be time to pack up our gear, including the kayaks, as we wrap up this incredible journey.
After a well-deserved lunch, we’ll begin our journey back to Paramaribo, reflecting on the unforgettable adventure we’ve shared and the remote, wild beauty of Suriname’s waterways.
WILDLIFE YOU CAN ENCOUNTER DURING THIS EXPEDITION
Giant river otter
This species is usually encountered with just their heads above water. In the water they are most definitely the apex predators; preying on fish like piranhas but also feed on snakes and even caiman! Most people think they’re cute, but when observed this close you can see their full size, muscular bodies and scar tissue. Beautiful and impressive animals to witness.
South American Tapir
Anaconda
Even with a maximum of nearly 7 meters they are still not the longest snake on the planet. But with the maximum of about 225kg they surely are the heaviest! Undoubtedly one of the Suriname’s BIG 5!
